PLAN
DETAILS

Cambridge Reach

  • Central Mill Creek (Grandy’s Pond to Grand River)
  • Cedarbrook Tributary

COLD-WATER
FISHERY
OBJECTIVES

Maintain, restore
and enhance
natural processes

Aquatic Habitat (creek geometry, fish barriers)

  • Very little natural creek geometry remaining, except for some stretches above and below Shade’s Mills
  • Major pond and reservoir, Grandy’s and Shade’s Mills
  • Channelized and armoured sections in Cambridge
  • Pressurized concrete culvert in downtown Cambridge a barrier to fish
  • Shade’s Mills reservoir a barrier to fish
  • Grandy’s Pond a barrier to trout moving upstream from Cedarbrook Tributary
  • Opportunities to restore meander pattern in selected locations above Shade’s Mills reservoir
  • Opportunities to restore riffle/pool sequences in selected locations above Shade’s Mills Pond
  • Grandy’s Pond and Shade’s Mills Reservoir not conducive to trout habitat
  • Trout population in Cedarbrook Tributary isolated and do not appear to inhabit Central channel

Water Quality & Quantity (erosion, sedimentation, pollutants)

  • Considerable storm-water sedimentation entering creek near Samuelson & Elgin Streets
  • Point bars and centre bars from road sand between Franklin and Elgin Streets
  • Localized bank erosion between Franklin and Elgin Streets
  • Likely urban contaminants, such as road salt, oils, etc. entering creek near Samuelson & Elgin Streets and possibly other locations
  • Limited information on the inventory of all storm water outlets that impact creek
  • Limited information on the inventory of all catch basins and other sources of entry for stormwater and contaminants discharging to creek. See Map Figure 33 » which is a more detailed illustration of the watershed boundary in Cambridge.
  • Some erosion risk at Grandy’s Pond if subjected to variations in water levels during extreme flows
